Optimize the SEO of your Blog (Part 1)

Blog atWebPresenceSearch Engine Optimisation is made of rules, suggestions and tips that, combined, can help you optimizing the SEO organic ranking  for your website and blog.

We have decided to group some of the these measures in a series of 3 articles. Many of these suggestions are irrelevant to your readers and have poor or zero impact on the look and feel of your blog. However they are definitely decisive when trying to improve the position and ranking on search engines for your website.

Use H1 tags, H2 and H3 in your articles:

Tags h1, h2 and h3 are used to modify the appearance, size or style of the text used in your articles. But this is not just about text changes since, both your readers and search engines “interpret” these values as a semantic indicator with high relevance and, therefore, worth of attention.

Specifically, you should use the h1 tag only for the titles of your articles. You may use the h2 tags to divide your article into sections, just like I’m doing here and, finally, use h3 tags to create sub-sections.

This way of organising the text creates two advantages:

  • The search engine spiders will be able to recognize the structure of your articles and read through in a better way.
  • The articles themselves will be less boring to the eyes of your readers, improving the readbility of the articles and, hopefully, gaining their attention and interest for future repeated visits.

Create the sitemap of your Blog:

Google sitemap pluginCreating a sitemap of your blog will help to show the search engines the structure of the contents included within, of course. This measure will make it easier for search engines to digest your blog and go though the different pages/posts included.

If you are maintaining your Blog with WordPress, I suggest using Google Sitemap XML, an effective plugin that will allow you to:

  • Create sitemap in text format and XML
  • Automatically send it to Google, Yahoo and Bing every time a new post/page is published or edit

Set a description your Home Page:

The Home Description is nothing more then the description that appears beneath your url when you search on Google or any search engine:

Google page description

Editing this description is very simple: you can do it via the WordPress plugin All in One SEO Pack, from the settings page. This plugin will enable the same editing funcionality from each page and post of your site. Remember to activate the plugin and enter the Home Description on the settings page.

Under the description you should include, in no more than 160 characters, what are the subjects and topics treated in your blog are. It is important then, for SEO purposes, to include words that have been also included in your Home page.

Enter Meta Data:

We have mentioned above the description of the home page. The same should be done with each page and Post of your Blog. Again, if you manage your blog using WordPress, this, can be easily achieved by inserting Description and Keywords when accessing your pages and post in edit mode:

Including Meta data

About the description: briefly and effectively describe what are you talking about in you page/post, keep the number of characters below160 and try to insert relevant words in your description, like the one appearing on your H1 title.

About the keywords: The keywords should be chosen based on the subject treated on the page/post you are editing. Remember that you should not exaggerate when entering the keywords, these should be separated by coma and, very important, try to enter “groups of words” instead of single words ( i.e. “web design” instead of “web, design”).

I hope you have found this information useful. Please, keep following our blog for future articles about SEO and how you can improve the organic search results.
